“Spring Valley Twins” turn heads

Mayor George Darden can often be heard referring to Spring Valley as “The Village of a Million Friends.”

Make that one million and two.

Standing 17 feet tall, two gleaming stainless steel sculptures that artist Ayokunle Odeleye titled “Spring Valley Twins” have been turning more than a few heads since they were installed at Memorial Park on Friday.

Standing guard over the Memorial Park Drive entrance to the park, the figures are meant to embody the spirit of the village that is home to 22,000 people who speak 37 different languages.

In Russian, Polish, Yiddish, Korean, Yoruba, Haitian Creole, Spanish and English, phrases on the base of each statue affirm the value of the village’s diversity.

A few park-goers have taken the time to bask in the statues’ shadow, and residents who live across the street from the park seem to be finding the art pieces a lively subject of discussion.

They’re nice but they seem to have swaybacks. Of course that’s what makes them so artful. Am I the only one who’s bothered by their posture?!

I want to get some big books and put them between these two.
