Golf Channel anchor’s comment to “lynch” Woods a non-issue?

January

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

If you haven’t heard already, Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman was suspended for two weeks yesterday after making a racially sensitive comment during last Friday’s telecast of the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Honolulu.

The Golf Channel said in its statement,

While we believe that Kelly’s choice of words was inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate … Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately.

Tilghman, who became golf’s first female anchor last year, was bantering with analyst Nick Faldo about how young players could challenge Tiger Woods when Faldo suggested they gang up on Woods. Tilghman replied, “Lynch him in a back alley.”

Since then, Tilghman has apologized, saying in a statement that she used “poorly chosen words.” She said she also apologized to Woods.

Mark Steinberg, Woods’ agent at IMG, said it was a non-issue and considered the matter “case closed.

He said Tuesday night in a statement released by the Golf Channel,

Tiger and Kelly are friends, and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly … Regardless of the choice of words used, we know unequivocally that there was no ill-intent in her comments.

Despite support from the Woods camp, the comment nevertheless set off a firestorm of controversy with the Rev. Al Sharpton weighing in and demanding she be fired.

Before her suspension was announced yesterday, Sharpton said on CNN’s “Prime News that he wanted to meet with the Golf Channel because the comments were “an insult to all blacks.

Lynching is not murder in general, it’s not assault in general … It’s a specific racial term that this women should be held accountable for. What she said is racist. Whether she’s a racist … is immaterial. She’s a broadcaster. The channel has to be accountable to the public.

What are your thoughts? Is it a non-issue? Is it an issue? Was the disciplinary action just?

enough. she played off a joke and she didnt think. she knew woods personally and apologized. he said no problem. that should be the end of it.
soo blown out of proportion. its a different story when a comedian does it about different ethnic groups huh…
    people need to just relax.

Yes it was a mistake … it was her true thoughts and feelings. If Tiger still thinks that ho is his friend he is a fool. That comment lets you know that now matter what they still see him as that ‘’niggar’’. I have Jewish friends ..could you imagine me saying …I going to call Hitler and havr him cook your ass ..ha..ha..ha. Hell no! Cause the fact that I chose Hitler makes it a racist joke and lynching in what white monsters did to African people …so the lynching joke was a reference to his being BLACK ! I read somewhere ..oh she was laughing so she did not mean it. White people laugh when they are doing the most horrible things …its the only time they are TRULY happy. And that’s not racist ..that’s a fact !

she said exactly what those white golfers want to do to Tiger every time he beats them on National TV. They hate him. Remember, he has a white wife, and they used to lynch Blacks just for looking at white women

I seriously doubt this was “premeditated” and was just the result of playing off of a “gang up on him” comment. Now, for those of you who say, “well, she’s just got latent racism,” I’d suggest that perhaps someone would think “lynching” after coverage of the Jena Six, too.

If only she had said “throw him in the trunk of a Buick” instead… (Or, maybe all sports coverage should go the way of C-SPAN: nix all the commentators.)
